The hills of the Western Ghats rise sharply from 700-2100 meters above sea level to Wayanad in Northeast Kerala. The Wayanad Plateau is a continuation of the Mysore Plateau, the southern portion of the Deccan Plateau.
The Wayanad Wild Life Sanctuary is accessible only by a 2-hour jeep safari. You can spot langurs, chital deer, sambar, peacocks, wild boar or wild elephants and the odd tiger/leopard wandering through, if you are lucky. The entrances to the sanctuary are at Tholpetty and Muthanga only.
A stunningly beautiful location with round-the-year salubrious weather, Wayanad has a lot of attractions including the Chembra Peak, the tallest mountain in the Western Ghats. The other places of interest here include among others the Edakkal Caves, the fascinating Soochipara Waterfalls, and the Pookode Lake.
There are still plenty of tea plantations here lending the place incredible charm and greenery. The drive here snaking up the hills offers many an incredible viewpoints that will bowl you over. Wayanad offers great opportunities for visitors to go hiking and engage in adventure sports. There are plenty of welcomingly well laid out resorts and homestays to suit every budget.
